This detail of hieroglyphs is from the entrance to the rock tomb replica, one of the museum's most popular teaching venues. The replica is modeled on elements from several originals in the Beni Hasan desert in Upper Egypt.

The Coffin of Lady Mesehti Solves a Mystery in Brooklyn

Our coffin of a lady, more than 4,000 years old, has solved a mystery for the famous Brooklyn Museum!

The Brooklyn Museum has the Western side of a Middle Kingdom coffin owned by a female. Unfortunately for them, the Western side does not traditionally name the owner or the town. The Rosicrucian Museum has all but the Western side of a MIddle Kingdom coffin of a lady.

When I saw the coffin panel published, I immediately called the Brooklyn Museum to ask if we could "compare notes". Correspondence and measurements were exchanged, and the coffins were a match!

Now, thanks to our coffin, the Brooklyn Museum now knows that the Lady Mesehti, of the town of Asyut, was the proud owner of their coffin piece.

Many museums are now exchanging information about their collections to increase knowledge.
