Fragmentary Taweret Medicine Bottle
Period: New Kingdom - 18th-20th Dynasties (1549-1069 BC)

Dimensions: 10.1 cm

Properties:
Pigment
Where used:
Household
Description:
Although the head is missing from antiquity, this is a very evocative little figure. It's purpose is to start a woman's milk flowing after childbirth. Milk from a healthy mother would be poured in the head of this piece and allowed to flow from the open nipples of the breasts, while the new mother watched. Evidence suggests that the placebo effect may have made this a very effective treatment.
